Being back with her husband and daughter was a joyful experience, but it wasn’t without its difficulties. Helen had spent too long looking over her shoulder to be able to settle into her new life so easily. For the first few weeks, she refused to leave the comfort of her husband’s Dakota apartment. It was, mostly, unfamiliar. There were a few tiny reminders of the life they had shared together before…

So many things under the “before” column. Helen tried not to think too hard about all the before. She wanted to get on with her life. There was so much time to make up for. Especially with Isabella. Her sweet little girl had grown into a beautiful young woman and she had missed so much of it.

Eventually, she had been coaxed out of the apartment a bit at a time. First, just out the front door to stand in the shadow of the old building. Then, later, to walk to Central Park with her right hand tucked in the crook of her husband’s arm and her left kept out of sight in the pocket of her coat. It was a beautiful, crisp day and, for the first time in over a decade, she felt almost at ease. Helen Pendergast, tipped her head against Aloysius’ shoulder, smiling softly. Helen could almost believe that no time had passed between them. But, there was still much to overcome.

It was something they would have to do together.
